My First Ascension

YAAP :)

|tank the human Valkyrie ascended today on 28.10.2002 on an SGI Indy running Linux.

Game wasn't that hard to play this time. I had a 2 week game running which led me to leave the dungeons with a cheap plastic imitation of the Amulet of Yendor, too bad. Well, but I learned a lot through this game and knew about the force of the Wizard of Yendor.
After a weekend beeing totally down by this fact I started again with the same charakter.
Found a bone file with gauntlets of power and speed boots very early in the game, Gnome Town had a temple with a priestess of Odin, so there I offered and got Mjollnir. Well my armor wasn't that good, but surprisingly I found a /oWishing with 3 wishes in the Gnomish Mines and wished for:

a blessed +2 gray dragon scale mail
2 blessed scrolls of genocide
a blessed +2 shield of reflection

and genocided L and ;

I didn't want to charge the wand again, since once it broke totally. So I tried to get another wish by trying, and wished for:

a blessed amulet of live saving

Bought the 7 candles.
Made sokoban, where of course I got an amulet of reflection, which wasn't very useful, since I got reflection through my shield and already wearing an amulet ...

No bigroom appeared. Quaffed loads of potions of object detection to find the way to Fort Ludios and found it. Then did my Quest with XP:16 and found a wand of death. Returned the Orb of Fate to my Quest Leader and he gave me back the Orb without the ability to forsee the future. Did not find any =oLevitation, so I digged through and was directly at the Castle. Went back and killed Medusa and then down again: The Castle was one of the hardest battles. Used the /oWishing with 3 wishes for the following:

a blessed ring of levitation
a blessed +2 helm of brilliance
a blessed bag of holding

The last wish I used for:

a blessed magic marker

I wrote a lot of enchant armor and came up to AC:-39. Went back all the way to the Gnome Town with quite a lot of scrolls of create monster, offered and got Frost Brand. Back in the Dungeons down to The Valley of the Dead. Lots of Wraiths were leaving corpses, so I was very fast at XP:30. Smoky Potions were invisibility, and I had twice the chance to get a wish from it. I wished for two amulets of life saving. This was a mistake maybe.
I did not want to pay anybody in Gehennom, killed Asmodeys and Juiblex. Balzebub was neither a problem. The only big problem were Disenchanter. Used lots of /oDeath to get rid of them, but my AC: went down to -28. Tried to find a magic marker or any wishes, but no luck.
Vlad the Imapaler wasn't that hard either. Got the Candelabrum. Back in Gehennom I found some nice thingies: lots of "oLS, =oTeleport Control, etc.
On the way back to Gnome Town for offering I met Yeenoghu. He was quiet tough but I survived his attacks. And back at the castle I met two angels sent by Tyr. After killing them I got Demonbane and Sunsword.
Went down to the last level and found the VS.
Since last time I attacked the Wizard with AC:-23 I decided to do everything quickly and went into the Tower. Found two scrolls of genocide and wiped out mind flayer and master mind flayer. The wizard wasn't very hard to kill, after 5 hits he died. Got The Book of the Dead and then down to level 49 right upon the VS:

Applied 7 candles to the Candelabrum, applied the Candelabrum, read the Book of the Dead and TATATA: the way down to Molochs Sanctum was open :)

My =oConflict was very useful down here. Got the amulet after killing the high priestess. But this time I wanted to be sure: read a scroll of identify and yes, it was the right amulet :)

As fast as I could I went up through Gehennom. Once at level 38 I was pulled back to level 39, but this was no problem. After Medusas level the wizard returned: Double Trouble. Very nice. He summoned monster and cursed. I killed him, but the other Wizard stole the Amulet. After fighting I got it back: but now I got two "oY. Damn it. I wasn't sure one of those would be the right one. Because even the identified showed up as ``the Amulet of Yendor'' and I had no scrolls of identify left. Ran up and at level 12 and he came back. Another annoying fight. I killed him again. Finally I got at level 1 and with a lot of fear of having the wrong amulet again I simply tried it and: surprise, I got the right one :))

Plane of earth wasn't that hard since I had lots of wands of digging. But the Wizard of Yendor seemed not to be dying in here. I killed him so many times that I couldn't remember how often. In the end I had three "oYendor ... He stole the Orb of Fate and I couldn't find it again. Elemental planes was hard though. Got killed once but survived. Fire was the hardest: 5 Archons reading scrolls of create monster, Dragons and Disenchanter everywhere. God, this was the hardest plane of all. Water was very easy since after few moves I found the teleport trap.

Ok, the astral plane was also hard enough. First and second temple were of course the wrong ones :( Found a blessed scroll of identify and now I knew which one was the right amulet :) Pestilence was tough and I died once again while having "oLS. So fearing Pestilence killing me again I finally offered and I was so happy about it that I didn't even copy the first words ... but then when the question arose if I would like to see my inventory I began to cut'n'paste:
